                The Institute for Legal History Studies

                The Institute for Legal History Studies (ILH), as the CUPL’s earliest institute for historical studies, has been committed to providing training to undergraduate and postgraduate students, and to promoting research in this field.

                The ILH comprises eleven members including 3 professors, 6 associate Professors, and 2 assistant Professors: Chen Guo, Jing Xie.

                The ILH offers students a curriculum of unparalleled breadth, which includes Chinese Legal History, Foreign Legal History, the History of Chinese Legal Thought, Seminars of Chinese Legal History, the American Constitution (bilingual), American History and Culture, Academic Standard and Thesis Writing, History and Film, Community Governance Studies, Legal Classics Reading, Special Issues in Chinese Legal History, Special Issues of Foreign Legal History, Special Issues of Comparative Legal History, Legal English, American Constitutional History, Chinese and Western Legal Culture, and Justice and Tao: A Comparison and Implementation of Chinese and Western Ethics etc.

                The ILH has conducted research on a wide variety of historical topics, including Chinese legal history, foreign legal history, the history of Chinese legal thought and so on. More recently, in addition to some legal monographs and textbooks, members of the ILH have published high-quality articles in some leading law journals, such as The Chinese Journal of Law (Faxue Yanjiu), Tribune of Political Science and Law (Zhengfa Luntan) and The Journal of the East China University of Political Science and Law (Huadong Zhengfa Daxue Xuebao). Besides this, the ILH has organised academic conferences and symposia of high impact, for example “Tradition and Reform of the Legal System”, “Defining Natural Law: Chinese and Western Natural Law and Comparative Law”, “Shuttling between Ancient and Modern Times (Daofa Gujin)” and “Legal History Salons (Fashi Shalong)”.
